The Five Realms

Step through the right portal and you'll land in Wayfair, a world that earned its name long ago, when it was a crossroads for travelers passing through ancient worldgates. After the First Sundering a thousand years ago, its five realms set down their old quarrels and lived in peace, watched over by the Mage Council, in harmony with the deep magic that runs through the land.

That peace is gone. These days Wayfair runs on borrowed technology and fear, ruled by a self-made tyrant who calls himself the President. His Unity Wardens guard the checkpoints, his clockwork spy-crows watch the skies, and his terrifying soldiers made of air enforce his orders.

Five realms make up this world, and no two are alike. In Dragonvale, dragons once circled mountains and breathed fire. Briarwood is a forest of antlered fairies, where the fruit on the trees will trap you for a hundred years if you take a single bite. Azure Isle hides an entire world beneath the waves, full of mermaids, a fanged leviathan, and a tricky kraken. Skywallow floats high above it all, a kingdom of cloud and crystal where man-eating pegasi and undulating sky jellyfish ferry travelers across the city. And Zaldana, once a vibrant, southern oasis, is now a scorched wasteland of ruins, guarding secrets no one has dared to dig up.

Hidden in each one, a lost ruler waits to be found.

Meet Some Wayfarian Creatures

Goblin

Goblin

Mottled gray and bald, with pointy ears and a wide mouth full of needle-sharp teeth, goblins are not the friendliest folk in Wayfair. Most have thrown in with the president, though a rare few keep happily to themselves.

Dragons

Dragons

Enormous, fierce, and strangely beautiful, dragons come in a variety of colors, have leathery wings, and might seem to look straight into your mind. They used to rule the skies of Dragonvale and are far more dangerous than their beauty lets on.

Squonk

Squonk

Quite possibly the most miserable creature in all of Wayfair, so ashamed of its warty, sagging skin that it weeps without pause, hiding by day and creeping out only at night. Harmless and secretly softhearted, if you can bear getting a little damp.

Glawackus Beast

Glawackus Beast

A nightmare cobbled together from grizzly, panther, and worse, with a razor-wire mane and a mouth full of teeth. It can barely see, so it freezes its prey with a paralyzing spell, sniffs them out, and devours them whole.

Man-Eating Pegasus

Man-Eating Pegasus

Larger than any horse, with coats like a swirl of deep space and great shimmering wings, Skywallow's pegasi are as beautiful as they are deadly. They can talk, they prefer the taste of people, and they have to be muzzled before anyone dares to ride.

Tree Dryad

Tree Dryad

Small forest folk with dark skin and pale hair, tree dryads can melt into the trees they tend and watch over all of Briarwood. They love offering travelers the fruit of the forest, but beware: one bite of fairy food and you are trapped in Briarwood for a hundred years.

Tarantula Fairy

Tarantula Fairy

Do not let the word fairy fool you. These tiny terrors swarm through Briarwood's forest in biting clouds and can leave even a careful traveler badly hurt.

Kitsuna

Kitsuna

Shapeshifters born in the forest of Briarwood, kitsuna take the form of foxes with many tails, the number of tails marking their rank. The most devoted serve the fairy queen as her elite guard.

Demons

Demons

They arrive dressed like fine gentlemen, all top hats and polished manners, but there is something deeply wrong underneath. Demons are the darkest power in Wayfair, and wherever they turn up, trouble is never far behind.
